My Foolproof Self-Tanning Routine for a Natural, Sun-Kissed Glow

There’s something about a golden, bronzed glow that instantly makes you look healthier, more rested, and—let’s be real—like you just stepped off a tropical vacation. But as much as I love the sun, I’m very committed to protecting my skin from harmful UV rays. That’s why I’ve perfected my at-home self-tanning routine—because who says you can’t have a year-round tan safely?

Lately, I’ve been getting so many DMs asking about my tanning secrets (especially after my recent pink shimmer bikini pics—hi, Beach Riot stans! 👋), so I figured it was time to share my step-by-step process along with my all-time favorite products. Whether you’re a self-tan newbie or a seasoned pro, this routine will give you the most natural, streak-free glow—no orange hands or patchy knees in sight.

Step 1: Prep Like a Pro

Shower, Shave & Exfoliate

The key to a flawless tan? Smooth, freshly prepped skin. I always set aside a dedicated “tan day” (usually Sundays—self-care, anyone?) and start with a warm shower to open up my pores. Then, I shave (if needed) and follow up with a gentle scrub or an exfoliating mitt to slough off dead skin.

My Go-To Exfoliator: Frank Body Coconut Coffee Scrub (it’s hydrating but gets rid of any dry patches).

Why This Matters:
✔️ Prevents patchiness (especially on elbows, knees, and ankles)
✔️ Helps your tan last longer
✔️ Ensures an even application

Pro Tip: Avoid oil-based scrubs or body washes before tanning—they can leave a residue that blocks the tanner from absorbing properly.

Step 2: Choose Your Tanning Product Wisely

Not all self-tanners are created equal! I’ve tried so many formulas over the years, and these are my holy grails for different needs:

For a Customizable Glow: Tanning Drops

Isle of Paradise Self-Tanning Drops (I mix 2-3 drops with my moisturizer for a subtle, buildable tan).
✔️ Best for: Face & light, natural color
✔️ Shade Range: Light/Medium/Deep

For a Quick, Even Application: Mousse

Bondi Sands Aero Tanning Foam (applies like a dream with a mitt, dries fast, and never streaks).
✔️ Best for: Full-body application
✔️ Shade Range: Light/Medium/Dark

For Hydration + Color: Gradual Tan Lotion

Jergens Natural Glow (perfect for maintaining your tan with zero effort).
✔️ Best for: Low-maintenance glow
✔️ Shade Range: Fair to Deep

Step 3: Apply Like a Master

Tools You’ll Need:

  • A tanning mitt (game-changer for avoiding orange palms)
  • A body brush (for blending around tricky areas like hands and feet)
  • Lotion (to buffer on dry spots—more on this below!)

My Application Tips:

  1. Start with a thin layer of lotion on elbows, knees, ankles, and wrists to prevent over-absorption.
  2. Work in sections (legs, arms, torso) and blend in circular motions.
  3. Use a brush for hands and feet—just a tiny amount goes a long way!
  4. Wait at least 6-8 hours before showering (overnight is ideal for maximum development).

Pro Tip: If you’re using a mousse, apply it before bed and let it develop while you sleep. Wake up glowing!

Step 4: Maintain & Extend Your Tan

To keep your tan looking fresh for at least a week:
✔️ Moisturize daily (dry skin = faster fading)
✔️ Avoid long, hot showers (they strip color faster)
✔️ Use a gradual tanner every few days to top up

Final Thoughts: A Safe, Sunless Glow Is the Best Glow

No UV damage, no sunburn, no regrets—just a beautiful, bronzed look that makes you feel like you’ve been lounging on a beach (even if you’ve just been binge-watching Netflix).

Have a favorite self-tanner I didn’t mention? Drop it in the comments—I’m always looking for new recs! 🌞✨

P.S. If you’re new to self-tanning, don’t stress! It gets easier with practice—just start light and build up.
